Investment casting is used for a variety of material like iron casting and stainless steel casting. It is the oldest procedure to cast metals and give them the desired shape. In this method, the wax is used to make a pattern. Then, different steps are employed to cast the desired metals and give them the desired shape. Following are the 9 steps used in investment casting for stainless steel casting.
Like any casting process, investment casting begins with a design. It is either a visual representation or a prototype.
- Making Mold
Mold is necessary to cast metals and give it the shape. First, an injection mold is produced and then it is machined using various techniques.
- Wax Pattern Assembly
In this step, wax pattern injection molds are assembled. It is done on a tree, or sprue, to form the full part.
In the coating process, prime slurry is applied to the sprue to coat the wax assembly in a fine ceramic liquid. It is covered with sand and another slurry is applied. This process is repeated till obtaining the required strength.
- Wax Removal
Once the ceramic mold is ready, steam is used to remove the wax from the mold.
- High-Temperature Burnout
To cure the ceramic mold, high level of heat is applied to the mold. After this step, it is prepared for preheating and casting.
For iron or stainless steel casting, the metal is heated to a molten form and then poured into the mold. Different precautions are taken during this step to make sure that the properties of the metal are optimal.
After casting, it is left to be cooled. This way, the molten metal takes the desired shape.
In this step, unwanted gates are removed, and then the finishing is done by tooling and machining.
